Brazil officials made the “right decision” to strip Neymar of his duties as captain ahead of the 2019 Copa America, according to Kleberson.

Kleberson, a former Manchester United midfielder who was part of Brazil’s last World Cup-winning squad in 2002, feels Tite was right to take leadership responsibilities away from Neymar at international level.

According to the oddsmakers a Manchester City striker is second favourite to finish as top scorer in the Copa America, which begins this weekend, but it’s not the one you’d expect.

While Lionel Messi is the obvious favourite to bag the most goals in Brazil, it’s Gabriel Jesus who follows hot on his heels after an impressive scoring spree for his country, rather than Messi’s international teammate Sergio Aguero.

Not so long ago Jesus had lost his place leading the line for the Selecao, with Roberto Firmino edging ahead of him under Tite after the City forward endured a frustrating World Cup last summer.

But Jesus has always tended to be a striker who gets on streaks and he’s doing just that for his country. After coming off the bench to score twice in seven minutes against the Czech Republic in March, Jesus netted against Qatar last week and scored twice more in the 7-0 win over Honduras on Sunday, taking his tally for his country to 16 in 29 caps.

Having also scored twice in the FA Cup final win over Watford the 22-year-old is certainly on a hot streak at the moment, one he will be desperate to take into the tournament to help fire Brazil to glory on home soil.

Tite could yet find a way to unleash Jesus and Firmino in the same side, but if he continues to adopt a one striker approach then the City man will surely be leading the line against Bolivia on Friday, especially with the Liverpool forward coming off a recent injury absence.

There will be plenty of pressure on Jesus during the tournament, with Neymar ruled out thanks to an ankle injury, but on recent evidence you wouldn’t bet against him thriving under that burden.

Tite has certainly been impressed with the forward’s form in the warm-up friendlies and the competition he’s providing up front.

“I’m very happy with Gabriel’s resumption of confidence,” he said. “It’s a great level of the two.”

Jesus’ form for his country has again highlighted his credentials as Aguero’s long-term successor at the Etihad. Given the way the Brazilian began his career at the club and the concerns Pep Guardiola had over Aguero’s suitablity for his system at the time, he may have expected to be the first choice already.

But Aguero has since reinvested himself, forcing Jesus to play the waiting game. He continues to contribute when given the chance at the Etihad and the fact that Guardiola backed him to start the cup final, having previously started every round of the competition, shows that the City boss hasn’t lost any faith in him.

If Jesus can win his own personal scoring battle with Aguero in Brazil over the next month, then it might edge him closer to finally usurping the brilliant Argentine back at the Etihad.

His form in the yellow of Brazil has certainly reminded City just how good he can be. At 22 time remains well and truly on Jesus’ side, and despite links with a move away in the second half of last season as he struggled for opportunities at times, he remains the heir apparent to Aguero and someone City will be determined to hold on
